Method

  1. Sift the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar together.

  2. Rub in the shortening with your fingertips.

  3. Add the well-beaten egg and the baking soda mixed with the buttermilk.

  4. If the dough is too stiff, add a little more milk so it remains soft.

  5. Roll out lightly, handle as little as possible, and cut with a biscuit cutter.

  6. Place on greased baking sheets and bake in a hot oven at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 minutes.
